Even if Chris Del Conte has been hanging out in graveyards, one thing is certain: The Longhorn-Aggie rivalry is alive and kicking. Jim Schlossnagle made sure of that. When word came down Tuesday that Schlossnagle was jumping ship to archrival Texas less than 24 hours after coaching Texas A&M in the national championship game, it ignited that old feud to fiery furnace levels.
Those Fightin’ Farmers were ready to bring out the torches and pitchforks, and understandably so. Schloss did the Aggies dirty, man. Look, Schlossnagle is a grown-up.
He can do what he wants and take whatever job he wants. But he bungled the move in such spectacularly shameful fashion that the Aggie fan base has every right to be pissed. Somewhere in hell, even Benedict Arnold is shaking his head and saying, “Dude, Schloss, that was wrong.
” Can you think of a modern-day sports exit that was handled any worse from a PR perspective? Roy Williams? Nah. Not even close. LeBron James? His “I’m taking my talents to South Beach” press conference fell about as flat as his acting in Space Jam 2.
But Cleveland forgave him eventually. Kevin Durant and Lincoln Riley are still among the most despised sports figures in the state of Oklahoma, and the same goes for Chris Beard in Lubbock. But, move over guys, because there’s a new king of the betrayal breakdance, and he’s doing an ugly, dad-bod move called the Schloss.
