Brazos Valley Bombers head coach Brian Nelson let out a ‘finally' right after his team mobbed Zac Daigre rounding first base. It’s been a long time coming for a squad that had yet to crack the code of winning extra-inning contests, dropping all four before Thursday's matchup. The first game of the second half of the Texas Collegiate League season showed a potential change of the tides as the Bombers downed the Baton Rouge Rougarou 6-5 at Edible Field in 10 innings.
Rather than using the term, “getting the monkey off your back”, Nelson felt it was more like an ape. “I felt like we were 0 for 100 in extra inning games and it was nice to be able to see our guys handle the adversity and take the punches,” Nelson said. The Bombers overcame a 4-2 deficit in the bottom of the ninth to send it to the 10th.
After conceding a run in the top half, the bottom half belonged to the Daigre duo. An RBI single from Jaxon Daigre knotted the game up at five. His brother Zac hit a hard bouncer to the Rougarou’s second baseman which got past him and skipped into shallow right field.
“I knew I had to hustle,” Zac Daigre said. “I know with my speed, I've got a chance of keeping that out and saving the game right there. Luckily, my brother was rounding hard and got the job done.
” Without hesitation, Jaxon rounded third and an off target throw from the second baseman home quickly turned the attention from Jaxon to Zac for a celebratory water shower. “Everybody was feeling real.
