Several beloved British high street retailers are set to close their doors permanently this month, signalling ongoing challenges for the sector. The British high street has been under considerable pressure in recent years, leading to numerous closures. The combination of the Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020/2021, the escalating cost of living crisis, and the burden of restructuring plans and high rents have forced many shops to cease operations.

Data from the Centre for Retail Research indicates that nearly 10,500 shops closed down in 2023, a period which also saw the loss of over 119,000 jobs within the industry. Regrettably, this downward trend is persisting, with additional closures scheduled for July, including some well-known names. Card Factory.

The Card Factory outlet located on Teviot Walk in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, is one such store that will be closing its doors on July 20. A spokesperson for Card Factory informed the Glasgow Times about the closure, explaining that the company regularly evaluates its store portfolio across the UK and Ireland, reports the Mirror . The proximity of another store was a factor in the decision.

The spokesperson stated: "With our other Cumbernauld store just around the corner in the Antonine Shopping Centre on Forth Walk, (0.2 miles away), we have taken the decision to close our store on Teviot Street from July 20. We look forward to continuing to serve all our Cumbernauld customers and helping them celebrate their special life moments.
