A POPULAR department store is shutting down a location in Alabama, leaving only nine others in the state. A closing sign was draped over the JCPenney store on Friday. The location in Mobile, Alabama , is at the Shoppes at Bel Air Mall.

A company spokesperson said the store will close by September 22, reports AL.com . "Regretfully, we are unable to continue our current lease terms for this store location and have been unable to find another suitable location in the market," the spokesperson told the outlet.



We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at our Mobile location throughout the years." The only remaining locations in the state are Alabaster, Dothan, Fultondale, Hoover, Montgomery, Oxford, Prattville, Tuscaloosa, and Trussville. This closure comes after JCPenney filed for bankruptcy in 2020 when there were 846 locations.

Now, that number has dwindled to 663. In April 2023, JCPenney announced that it remained hopeful about the future of the business and had plans to attract customers. “Our customers are making tradeoffs every day,” said Marc Rosen , CEO.

“We’re very clear and focused on our direction, who our customer is, and what are their needs and wants." In a similar fashion, clothing retailer Express filed for bankruptcy and announced the closure of over 100 locations. The company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April and launched liquidation sales of up to 80% off.
