It was a day of champions for area athletes May 24 at the Division I regional track and field meet at Port Clinton. The Avon boys and girls both won their respective team titles, the boys in dominant fashion and the girls in a tighter battle. It was the second regional title for the Avon boys in four years.
There also were five area event champions among the boys and five among the girls. The Avon girls were not in the lead until the discus results were compiled, boosting the Eagles’ total by 18 points as Rania Brown (145-5) and Bridget Bergen (141-0) took the top two spots. While the points from the discus weren’t added in until later in the meet, Avon used the success of the two throwers to set up the entire day.
“They were seeded one and two, and I felt like if they came in and did what they were supposed to do, it would really set us up for a strong meet if the girls on the track also performed,” said Coach Sam Ulery. “We had a roller coaster there for a minute, going up and down. But when it mattered the most, the girls stepped up and ran their best.
It’s just such a fun feeling watching them compete at the highest levels and doing their best.” The Eagles finished with 55 points to 49 for Perrysburg. Toledo Whitmer was third with 421⁄2, and Rocky River finished fourth with 34.
Other area teams to score among the girls were Amherst (241⁄2), Avon Lake (23), Westlake (23), North Ridgeville (10), Lorain (8), Bay (4) and Olmsted Falls (3). The throwing event.
