Having performed over 800 shows in just seven years with his band Best Kept Secret, lead singer and bass guitarist Behram Siganporia says with an air of certainty, “Nobody performs as much as we do.” Having travelled all over the world, including less frequented countries like Armenia, Jordan, Norway, the former pilot feels his quartet has established a strong reputation on the international stage. In a conversation with Bangalore Times, he talks about adapting to different cultures, growing with one’s audience and maintaining discipline on the road.

Excerpts: We have visited over 85 cities, over the years. As a rule, we try to incorporate their culture within our set, one way or the other. We learn a few sentences in their language and weave them in; it always works in our favour.

Regardless, music is universal. Good music in any language will be appreciated. When asked about why Best Kept Secret is always in demand, Behram says it’s because of their ability to resonate with the audience.

“We read the crowd really well! We do go in with a plan, but we keep switching on the fly based on what the audience is reacting well to. Be it Bollywood, classics or new-age, we make sure all listeners have something to enjoy while we perform. But of course, we make sure to do it in our own, quirky way.

Some months, we do almost 20 shows, andduring such peak seasons you have to stay very disciplined. Plenty of rest during travel and abstaining from partying if there are back-to-b.
