“Matchy-matchy” is a fashion term with a bit of a patchy history. It’s the sort of concept that might recall identikit, saccharine-hued bridesmaid dresses, cringey couple engagement shoots and childhood photo albums (“But darling you looked so adorable in your candy-striped romper suit and matching sun hat”). But no longer, as in recent years the matchy-matchy fashion co-ord has risen through the ranks to become a cult, best-selling clothing category, particularly during the summer months.

Of course, the co-ord in its purist form has been on the fashion scene for over 100 years – stretching back to Coco Chanel’s tweed suits and the colourful Mary Quant sets of the 1960s – but the 2024 iterations come in all manner of guises, from holiday-ready, crocheted shorts sets to eye-popping leopard print pairings. But, really, the main selling point of the co-ord is that it will cut your getting ready time in half, thanks to the fact that it is, essentially, a ready-made outfit that you can wear together, or mixed and matched separately, for maximum cost-per-wear. Brand-wise, we would recommend checking out Peachy Den, whose Deba set was seen everywhere at this year (Maisie Williams was also snapped in the brand’s Cindy checked co-ord).

Faithfull The Brand is another fashion editor favourite for summer holidays, thanks to its breezy fabrics and loose silhouettes, while With Nothing Underneath’s seersucker sets are a go-to for summer-in-the-city stripes. Heatwave dre.
