Now in its 10th year, the Marshall-Harrison County Juneteenth Celebration promises to be an epic one with the return of some favorite events along with some new additions, happening all this weekend. “The 10th year meant so much, and I just didn’t want it to be a standard Juneteenth, so I was going to work my buns off to make this 10th year (exceptional),” Donald Ravenell, who co-chairs the committee with his wife, Alma Ravenell, said of all of the amazing plans they have in store. “And I want people to see the value that we have here in Marshall, Texas,” he added.

“I want them to see it. I want them to feel it. I want to understand the joy that we have.



And that’s why I get emotional because of the joy I see.” The commemoration marks the day in 1865 when slaves in Texas finally learned that the Civil War had ended and slavery had been abolished. The news, which was delivered in Galveston by General Gordon Granger and Union soldiers, came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which was issued in 1862 and became official Jan.

commemoration program, at Wiley University’s Julius S. Scott Sr. Chapel, featuring keynote speaker Roy Griggs, president and CEO of Griggs Enterprise, Incorporated.

Griggs, who retired in 2023, will share his inspiring story of rising from crew member to owner of more than 14 McDonald’s restaura.
