Thursday, July 11, 2024 Rail passengers have been advised to expect delays next month due to significant engineering work taking place in Birmingham . The project in Duddeston, running from 17 to 26 August, involves moving tracks and relocating a railway signal as part of preparations for HS2. The engineering work will affect services between Birmingham New Street and several key destinations, including Stansted Airport, Wales, and Scotland.
CrossCountry, the rail operator, has indicated that while some routes will bypass the work, this will result in longer journey times. Passengers traveling to or through the Birmingham area, particularly those heading to Water Orton and Coleshill Parkway, are advised to check their travel plans in advance and allocate extra time for their journeys. Network Rail has assured that every effort is being made to minimize the impact on passengers.
The work includes moving a section of track across a new bridge at Duddeston Mill Road, constructed by HS2 Ltd and its contractor Balfour Beatty Vinci. This change will facilitate the future construction of a new viaduct for high-speed trains over the existing railway into Birmingham Curzon Street station. Additionally, between Birmingham New Street and Coleshill Parkway stations, engineers will replace 450 meters of track and two crossovers, which are sections of track that allow trains to move from one track to another.
Network Rail has stated that these upgrades aim to make journeys smoother and mor.
