Tuesday, May 28, 2024 Thousands of flights, including Delta, were cancelled this Memorial Day , turning the holiday into a unique nightmare for passengers. During the Memorial Day weekend, skies were bustling with unprecedented volumes of passengers, yet the subsequent days were marred by persistent flight disruptions.

As late as Tuesday morning, FlightAware reported that over 1,100 flights faced delays and upwards of 200 were canceled either within, or on flights entering or departing from, the United States. The difficulties only escalated throughout the morning, following a Monday tally that included more than 8,400 delays and 580 cancellations. From Saturday to Monday, the combined tally reached over 20,000 delays and 860 cancellations.



New York City’s airports bore the brunt of these disturbances on Monday. LaGuardia led with 15 percent of outbound flights canceled and 40 percent delayed, closely followed by Newark Liberty International Airport with 12 percent of flights canceled and 34 percent delayed. In the midst of the widespread travel chaos over the Memorial Day weekend, several airlines faced significant operational challenges.

American Airlines saw 17% of its flights delayed and 4% canceled, while Southwest Airlines experienced delays for 16% of its flights and cancellations for 3%, Delta Airways with 6% delays. International carriers were also impacted; China Eastern Airways reported 20% delays and 2% cancella.
