Friday, June 14, 2024 The 121st session of the UN Tourism Executive Council hosted delegates from 47 countries, including 18 Tourism Ministers, to promote the Organization’s vision for the sector amidst its recovery from the pandemic’s effects. UN Tourism reported that approximately 285 million international tourists traveled in the first quarter of 2024, marking a 20% increase compared to the previous year. Furthermore, international tourism receipts rebounded to USD 1.

5 trillion in 2023, as per UN Tourism data. Opening the session, UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, stressed the need to embrace innovation and grow and direct investment into the sector in order to drive its positive transformation. “With tourism having bounced back from the biggest crisis in its history, now is the time to channel our energy into building greater resilience against any future shocks,” he said.



“At the same time, we must ensure tourism’s growth benefits people everywhere, above all by expanding access to education and job opportunities and harnessing the power of new technology.” The Secretary-General proceeded to deliver his report to the Members, outlining the Organization’s accomplishments since the Council’s previous meeting, with particular emphasis on shared priorities such as enhancing investments in tourism, education, and fostering innovation within the sector.
