Tuesday, June 18, 2024 Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s main hub, reports a rise in passenger traffic for May, fueled by strong demand for leisure travel to southern Europe and the early Whitsun holiday. However, passenger numbers still remain 11.8% below pre-pandemic levels recorded in May 2019.

Year-to-Date Increase, Lagging Recovery While overall passenger traffic for the first five months of 2024 climbed 8.5% year-on-year to 23.1 million, Frankfurt’s recovery lags behind other major European hubs.

London Heathrow, for example, recently announced record-breaking passenger numbers for May and surpassing 81 million passengers in the past year. Regional Traffic Trends Frankfurt saw passenger increases to most regions in May, with a notable surge (17.9%) in travel to Asia, particularly China and India.

However, traffic to Africa remained stagnant compared to the previous year, while travel to the Middle East dropped 13.4%. Fraport attributed this decline to the region’s current political climate.

Group-Wide Growth Fraport, which also operates airports in Slovenia, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Brazil, and Peru, witnessed a 6.3% year-on-year increase in group-wide passenger traffic for May, reaching 15.8 million.
