Having sex on ancient monuments and snapping nude selfies at religious sites are among the outrageous acts tourists have been caught doing while abroad. Last week a tourist has been caught allegedly scrawling their name on an ancient monument in Italy. The 27-year-old Dutch tourist is said to have scribbled his own signature on to a fresco on the wall of a home in the historical village of Herculaneum near Pompeii, before he was with vandalism, and the defacement of artistic works, according to a statement from police.

Incidents of cultural insensitivity are not limited to Italy - despite Italy seemingly having more than its fair share of them. Tourists the world over have made headlines for their ridiculous behaviour. Before this Dutch tourist was snapped, there have been multiple reports of people carving or writing their names into various Italian monuments - including the Colosseum.



Last year, Bristolian fitness trainer Ivan Dimitrov when he was filmed allegedly grinning as he carved his and his girlfriend’s names into the 2000 year old amphitheatre with a key. In a letter to Rome’s Mayor, seen by , he expressed regret for his actions, saying: "I admit with profound embarrassment that only after what regretfully happened did I learn of the antiquity of the monument." Later that same month another tourist was filmed - this time, it was a teenage girl from Switzerland who was filmed by a guide.
