Millions of Australians have concerns about travelling abroad, according to new research. A Finder survey found one in two (49 per cent) Australians are reluctant to head overseas for a raft of reasons. Here are the most common.
.. Of the 1,000 plus respondents, seven per cent didn't want to stray too far from home as they couldn't be away from friends or family they have to care for.
Another eight per cent also feared they end up being stuck in another country and unable to return to Australia. It was something plenty of people experienced at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic due to things like visas or permanent residency expiring. Homesickness and missing friends or family was another deterrent for travel for 11 per cent of respondents.
"Being outside familiar surroundings can cause a lot of stress for people – and in some cases it's not worth the hassle for them," Tim Bennett, insurance expert at Finder, said. Similarly, 11 per cent of people didn't want to deal with the headache of working out what kind of travel insurance they might need and thus simply chose not to travel all together. Leaving their home unoccupied and the worry about it being broken in to is another reason 12 per cent of respondents said they aren't travelling.
