FOR many, hot summer days means going for a swim outside to cool off. But going into the sea isn't always doable, between the cold temps and long journey to get there. Just minutes from Dublin city centre is an outdoor pool with a range of amenities.
Located on Clontarf Road in Dublin 3, Clontarf Outdoor Pool has been open since 1886. Back then it was known as Clontarf Baths and Assembly Rooms, and it had a large tidal seawater swimming pool jutting out from the promenade into the bay. The Clontarf Swimming Club was founded in the Parish Hall in 1884, and the outdoor pool was where they were based.
According to bosses of the pool, "records show that Clontarf Swimming Club held regular races and waterpolo matches at the Clontarf Baths". Now, the sea water swimming pool is still located outdoors and is filtered and lightly chlorinated. The pool, which is very close to Dollymount Strand, promotes "fun and adventure in a safe and clean environment", the website explained.
It measures 900 square metres in total with a depth of 1.875 metres at the deepest end and 1.05 metres at the shallow end.
It is 40 meters long at its longest point and 25 meters wide at the widest point. It has 5 competitor classic lanes and there are fully qualified lifeguards and instructors on duty. Changing areas, toilets and hot showers are also available on site.
Public sessions are held every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Lasting two hours, it costs just €10 for both adults a.
