Road closures, temporary fences and fancy dongas are the next steps in turning Kings Park to Bling Park . Overnight accommodation is being trialled on Forrest Drive, which is closed to cars. Three “tiny cabins” have been installed behind temporary fences on Forrest Drive, with the trial conducted while the picturesque road is closed to public traffic during the Lightscape event, from June 7 to July 28, 2024.

There are barricades and “road closure” signs at both ends of Forrest Drive. With Fraser Avenue, it is the most picturesque drive in the park, with views over the Swan River. Journalism for the curious Australian across politics, business, culture and opinion.



The single room cabins are $495 a night, for a minimum of two nights — $990. One cabin is opposite the Firefighters’ Memorial near the DNA Tower. The others are further down Forrest Drive at Dryandra Lookout and Balga Car Park in one of the most scenic parts of our “park for the people”.

The tiny cabins belonging to a company called Heyscape have a bed, kitchenette, wifi, solar panels, water from a tank and a composting toilet. But don’t think you can pull up in a Kings Park car park and stay overnight in your campervan. Kings Park is an A-Class Reserve and its bylaws have historically stated “no one can park, stay or lodge overnight”.
