Friday, June 14, 2024 Sungani, a young newcomer in South Luangwa National Park, has secured third place in the 2024 Safari Awards’ ‘Best New Lodge’ category. Established in 2007, these awards celebrate those who consistently exceed expectations, demonstrate unwavering commitment to conservation, excel in operations, and actively support local communities. During the evaluation, Sungani impressed the judges with several notable qualities: Since assuming management of the remote site in 2019, the Davy family has undertaken a significant rewilding initiative to rejuvenate the once marginal area.

This initiative has led to increased sightings of various big cats, including the Kulandila male and female leopards, as well as the recent appearance of Katatu, a young male leopard. Furthermore, in May 2024, a pack of 18 wild dogs exhibited high activity, suggesting potential proximity to denning sites near the lodge. These developments are remarkable for an area previously under considerable pressure a decade ago.

Notable recent wildlife sightings have also included a baby bushpig, typically concealed by its parents, and an aardvark, adding to the region’s biodiversity allure..
