Locals of a popular beach town in are up in arms about the skyrocketing prices of sunbeds as summer tourism begins to heat up. Cala Major in Palma is one of the most popular beaches in Majorca, where thousands flock every year for sun and relaxation - but its popularity means that securing a sunbed is now harder and more expensive than ever. The reports that a standard sun lounger on Cala Major is now around 25 Euro - and the premium service is 70 euro.
However, the “premium” service gets you nothing more than the bed and a parasol - not even a free drink! As tourists continue to flock to the beach, Palma City Council has denied claims that more sunbeds have been put on the beach, despite locals protesting that the space is being monopolised by the loungers while locals prefer to sit on their towels for free. The skyrocketing prices come amid intense across the Balearic islands in response to what some say is rampant over-tourism. In late May, thousands of protesters swarmed the streets of Palma carrying signs and banners which demanded a cap on the number of tourists allowed, as well as harsher worded slogans such as “tourists go home”.
As they marched through the popular tourist area, they jeered at holidaymakers, telling them to leave the island. Protesters have continued their action across the island, pledging to take over beaches.
