Saturday, May 25, 2024 SBB has exercised a contract option for 33 additional FLIRT multiple units. This order is part of a framework agreement signed in 2022 between SBB, Thurbo, and RegionAlps, which allows for the development and delivery of up to 510 single-deck FLIRT trains. Following the signing of the framework agreement, Stadler was initially tasked with producing 286 FLIRT trains in 2022.

Nearly a year and a half later, Stadler unveiled the new FLIRT Evo to the public. Since the introduction of direct connections between Switzerland and France in 1997, Stadler is now collaborating with SBB to enhance cross-border regional transport to meet the demands of an international economic area. The new vehicles will operate across borders, providing faster direct connections between northwestern Switzerland and Alsace.



These new multiple units will be certified for use in both Switzerland and France, offering passengers quicker and more direct travel every 30 minutes starting at the end of 2030. “We are proud to be able to expand our rail service to France with our proven bestseller FLIRT. The signing of this contract option takes cross-border traffic a significant step forward.
