Wednesday, June 19, 2024 Saudi Arabia has taken significant strides in enhancing the Hajj experience for elderly and disabled pilgrims. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, under the direction of Saudi leadership, has rolled out expanded services to ensure all pilgrims can participate fully and safely in this sacred journey. Abdullah Al-Harbi, the Director General of Social Responsibility and Voluntary Work at the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah , emphasized the ministry’s dedication to providing effective services for a smooth and enriching Hajj experience.

The Kingdom’s efforts focus on making the holy sites accessible and providing comprehensive support for all pilgrims. By Dr Vikram Vora, Medical Director, International SOS shares his experience “The rigorous activities involved in Hajj, such as circumambulation, walking between hills of Safa and prolonged standing, can lead to physical fatigue and strain. Hence, it is extremely important to build physical endurance in the period leading up to the pilgrimage.



While core exercises are highly recommended, one can start training by walking for 30 mins a day, gradually building to a brisk pace and greater distances over days or weeks”. Key upgrades include specially equipped buses, clearly marked routes for stoning the Jamarat, and accessible pathways throughout the holy sites. To further support those with disabilities, dedicated medical teams and over 6,500 trained volunteers are available to assist.
