Friday, May 31, 2024 The state of São Paulo, Brazil, is set to introduce a significant new rail link between two of its largest cities following the governor’s approval of a 14.2 billion reais ($2.7 billion) contract.
The Intercity Eixo Norte project will establish a rail connection between São Paulo, the state capital, and Campinas, the third-largest city, via Jundiaí. This 101-kilometer rail line will feature an express service. Governor Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas of São Paulo signed the concession contract, officially transferring the responsibility for construction and 30 years of operation to the C2 Mobilidade Sobre Trilhos consortium.
This consortium, consisting of Brazil’s Comporte Participações and China’s CRRC Hong Kong, secured the project through a successful bid in a February auction. The project not only includes the express service but also encompasses two additional lines: a new 44-kilometer Intermetropolitan Train (TIM) line between Campinas and Jundiaí, and the existing 57-kilometer Line 7 of the state metro network from Jundiaí to São Paulo. The operation of Line 7 will be handed over from the state rail company CPTM to the C2 consortium.
