Tuesday, June 18, 2024 The latest research from Booking.com, focusing on LGBTQ+ travel, unveils persistent challenges that these travelers encounter and their strategies for overcoming them to enjoy global experiences on their terms. The report indicates that a staggering 92% of LGBTQ+ travelers from India have faced discrimination while traveling, encountering prejudice from both fellow travelers (79%) and locals (81%).

Additionally, 72% report feeling more insecure and self-aware due to their LGBTQ+ identity. Despite these obstacles, they are increasingly taking charge of their travel plans, from careful selection of destinations to booking specific plane seats and even adopting different personas to ensure safer and more enjoyable journeys. Concerning destination choices, budget considerations are paramount for 76% of these travelers, closely followed by the desire to express their true selves while traveling, a significant factor for 75%.



The study shows that 52% prefer destinations known for LGBTQ+ friendliness, and 77% have traveled to such places in the past year. Meanwhile, 47% consider traveling to places where they can help enhance societal acceptance and awareness. Conversely, nearly 70% have canceled trips to locations perceived as unsupportive of LGBTQ+ individuals.

To counter potential discrimination during flights, 63% of Indian LGBTQ+ travelers have encountered negative incidents with other passengers directly related to their identity, and 65% are apprehensiv.
