Wednesday, June 5, 2024 Oklahoma City is set to claim the record for America’s tallest building with the upcoming construction of the 1,907-foot Legends Tower. New York City and Chicago are recognized for hosting the tallest skyscrapers in the United States. However, this status is poised to shift in the coming years as the 20th largest city in the U.
S. aims to eclipse this record. Recently, the Oklahoma City council approved a pivotal zoning adjustment for a major downtown development, effectively removing previous height restrictions.
This green light allows developers to proceed with constructing what will be the nation’s tallest building at 1,907 feet. The massive project, spearheaded by developer Scot Matteson, is set to transform the city’s skyline. Dubbed The Boardwalk at Bricktown, the development encompasses approximately five million square feet and features four towers.
The tallest, Legends Tower, initially proposed at 1,750 feet, saw its planned height increased to 1,907 feet in January—a nod to the year Oklahoma joined the union as the 46th state. This development isn’t just about soaring heights; Matteson Capital envisions a vibrant mixed-use complex costing $577 million. It will host residential spaces, hotels, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues, as detailed in a June 2023 presentation to city officials.
During the city council’s decisive meeting, the proposal received overwhelming support, with eight out of nine members voting for the heig.
