The Association of American Railroads (AAR) has released the latest U.S. rail traffic data for the week ending June 29, 2024, along with the figures for June 2024.
In June 2024, U.S. railroads reported originating 885,864 carloads, a decrease of 1.
7 percent (15,019 carloads) compared to June 2023. Additionally, U.S.
railroads originated 1,074,646 containers and trailers, marking an 8.7 percent increase (85,896 units) from the same month last year. Overall, the combined carload and intermodal originations for June 2024 totaled 1,960,510, reflecting a 3.
8 percent rise (70,877 carloads and intermodal units) from June 2023. The AAR’s monthly tracking revealed that 11 out of 20 carload commodity categories saw gains in June 2024 compared to June 2023. Notable increases included: grain, up by 10,971 carloads (17.
5 percent); chemicals, up by 8,273 carloads (6.7 percent); and petroleum & petroleum products, up by 5,291 carloads (14.0 percent).
On the other hand, declines were observed in commodities such as coal, down by 26,273 carloads (10.4 percent); crushed stone, sand & gravel, down by 9,947 carloads (11.2 percent); and other carloads, down by 4,016 carloads (16.
