INNOVATION is rare, but a new floating boardwalk keeps Massachusetts treading on water. The 3,000-foot-long Lake Williams opened to the public of Marlboro, Massachusetts , on May 6. The walkway creates a two-mile loop, connecting the Lake Williams Trail to half of Lake Williams and a trail near Interstate 495.

It traverses Lake Williams' 113 acres of water and land and provides a view like no other. The walkway connects the lake and provides an extra half-mile of trail, boosting runners and hikers. Under Mayor Christian Dumais's direction, the city constructed the boardwalk using $1.

7 million in federal stimulus money from the pandemic. Dumais, like many Marlboro residents, were thrilled to venture into formerly uncharted waters. "My childhood, the lake was totally off limits," Dumais said to CBS News .

"That's because Lake Williams was once the source of the city's drinking water supply." Now, residents are able to achieve a feat on biblical scales. "Once you step onto the walk, it's like 'Oh wow,' because where else can you do this?" Dumais asked.

"Knowing that you can actually walk on water." Construction on the project began in the summer of 2023, and on opening day, city officials held a brief ceremony to celebrate its completion. A ceremonial ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the front of the Williams Street entrance, where residents were encouraged to attend.

Dozens of excited residents walked the half-mile extension for the first time following the ceremony. Acces.
