Saturday, June 1, 2024 An unprecedented heatwave grips India, with major cities like Delhi and Nagpur experiencing record-breaking temperatures. Following closely on the heels of Delhi’s scorching 52.9 degrees Celsius, Nagpur has reportedly surpassed the 50-degree mark.
Data from two Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) in Nagpur indicates a peak temperature of 56 degrees Celsius in Ramdaspeth and Sonegaon, raising significant concerns for public safety. While other AWS stations within Nagpur reported slightly lower readings, the widespread nature of the extreme heat suggests a regional crisis. Recent headlines highlighted Delhi’s historic heatwave, with a reading of 52.
9 degrees Celsius at the Mungeshwar station. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is currently scrutinizing the validity of this data. This surge in temperatures follows Delhi nearing 50 degrees Celsius just a day prior.
Previously, Churu, Rajasthan held the dubious distinction of the season’s hottest district, recording 50.5 degrees Celsius. The IMD’s latest reports paint a concerning picture.
Heatwave and severe heatwave conditions are affecting vast swathes of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. Furthermore, significant portions of Rajasthan, Bihar, East Madhya Pradesh, and isolated pockets within Odisha and Jharkhand are experiencing extreme heat. Heatwave conditions are also present in parts of Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Himachal Pradesh, and isolated areas of West Madhya.
