Monday, May 27, 2024 At least 15 people have died, hundreds are injured, and extensive destruction spans multiple states after powerful storms swept through the US South on Sunday. The severe weather impacted Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, obliterating homes and even destroying a truck stop where dozens sought refuge. The worst damage occurred in a region stretching from north of Dallas to the northwest corner of Arkansas.

The storm system continues to threaten parts of the Midwest, with forecasters predicting the greatest risk shifting eastward by Monday, potentially affecting areas from Alabama to near New York City. In Texas, seven fatalities were reported in Cooke County, near the Oklahoma border, after a tornado tore through a rural area near a mobile home park. The victims included two children, ages 2 and 5.



Three family members were found dead in one home, according to the county sheriff. Texas Governor Greg Abbott reported 100 injuries and over 200 destroyed homes and structures, with winds reaching up to 135 mph. A truck stop in Valley View was particularly hard-hit, with the storm shearing off its roof and walls.

Oklahoma also faced significant damage, with two people killed and numerous houses destroyed. Injuries included guests at an outdoor wedding. In Arkansas, five people died, including a 26-year-old woman in Olvey and multiple individuals in Benton and Marion counties.

In Kentucky, a man was killed in Louisville when a tree fell on him, confirmed as storm-re.
