Thursday, May 30, 2024 Tragedy struck during the maiden voyage of the world’s largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas, when a passenger died after jumping overboard on Sunday morning. The incident occurred shortly after the ship departed from Florida for its week-long Caribbean adventure, as reported by the New York Post. The man’s identity remains unknown.

The US Coast Guard stated that the cruise ship deployed a rescue boat, located the man, and brought him back aboard, where he was pronounced deceased. “Beyond assisting in the search, the US Coast Guard did not have much involvement in this incident,” the agency added. Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, which stretches 1,200 feet and accommodates over 10,000 people, was approximately 300 miles out of PortMiami when the incident occurred, according to CruiseHive.

The ship paused its journey for two hours to assist the Coast Guard in search and rescue efforts. Despite initial signs of life, the passenger succumbed to his injuries, CruiseHive reported. Passengers onboard shared videos of the rescue mission on social media, expressing shock and concern.

The Icon of the Seas offers a resort getaway, a beach escape, a theme park, and more than “40 ways to dine, drink, and be entertained,” according to the company..
