Sunday, July 7, 2024 Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) experienced its busiest travel period on record following the Fourth of July weekend , according to airport officials. The surge in travel coincides with a national trend predicted by the American Automobile Association (AAA). AAA Forecasts Busy Travel Week Prior to the holiday weekend, AAA projected nearly 71 million Americans would travel over 50 miles for the Independence Day holiday, with a significant number expected to fly.

This prediction materialized at LAX, with extensive lines forming for baggage check-in on Sunday as travelers departed Southern California. “We anticipated this July 4th week would be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel.

Increased Traffic on Roads as Well The busy travel period wasn’t limited to air travel. According to AAA, lower national gas prices compared to last year incentivized road trips. For those returning home by car on Sunday, peak traffic congestion was expected between 2 PM and 8 PM.
