(Robert Gauthier/Los Angeles Times via Getty Images) Los Angeles Times via Getty Images With less than a month to go until the one-year anniversary of the Maui wildfires that destroyed much of Lahaina last August, a conversation about the recovery efforts came up on a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience , one of the world’s most popular podcasts. Joe Rogan and guest Jimmy Dore (#2173) opened a discussion surrounding the rebuild of Lahaina and dove into the lack of government assistance given to Maui as compared to aid the United States is providing to foreign nations, specifically Ukraine.
“Imagine being a person in Maui that lost your home,” Rogan sympathized. “They give you $700, and then you still can’t rebuild. It’s a year later, nothing’s been built.
” “And in the blink of an eye, they give $100 million to [Ukraine’s President Volodymyr] Zelensky,” Dore added. The $700 figure is a reference to the one-time payment issued after the fire to families who lost their homes. The amount was widely panned for being insufficient due to the high cost of living in Hawaiʻi.
It prompted Newsweek to do a comparison of Hawaiʻi and Ukraine aid last year. “Even worse, [the U.S.
Government] accidentally sent Ukraine $6 billion,” Rogan continued, referring to the Pentagon’s accounti.
