Thursday, May 23, 2024 IMD issues an urgent red alert as five Kerala districts brace for potentially devastating rainfall, disrupting normal life and safety. The Weather Authority of India has sounded a red alert for intense rainfall in Kerala. According to current predictions, five districts, namely Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Idukki, are poised to experience particularly severe downpours.

A weather advisory from the authority outlines a cyclonic system hovering over the southern part of Kerala at the lower and middle atmospheric levels, influencing the regional climate significantly in the coming days. The forecast suggests a series of thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rain and lightning, with gusty winds across Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana through to May 27th. In its latest regional update, the authority has elevated the alert level to red for two districts today, following an increase from an orange to a red alert in Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam yesterday due to expected heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad remain on orange alert, with Kannur and Kasaragod under a yellow alert. Further predictions indicate the possibility of substantial rainfall in Coastal and South Interior Karnataka on May 22nd and 23rd, in Lakshadweep on May 23rd, and in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on May 24th, extending to Kerala on the 24th .
