Sunday, May 19, 2024 Idukki district under red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Sunday and Monday. The district administration in Idukki has instructed the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) and Tourism Department to curb tourism activities. Jitheesh Jose, the secretary of Idukki DTPC, announced that the Kolukkumalai jeep safari will be suspended for Sunday and Monday as a precautionary measure.
Given the red alert, restrictions will be enforced on DTPC destinations in Idukki. If adverse weather conditions, such as heavy wind and rainfall, persist, access to attractions like the Cantilever Glass Bridge at Wagamon and DTPC-operated boating services will also be halted, Mr. Jose stated.
He further elaborated that the district had experienced a significant influx of tourists in recent days. “All DTPC centers will remain operational on Sunday and Monday, with restrictions being contingent upon weather developments,” he added. In addition to regulating tourism, the district administration has imposed a ban on mining and quarrying activities for the specified period.
Control rooms have been established across Thodupuzha, Idukki, Udumbanchola, Devikulam, and Peerumade taluks. Tahsildars have been instructed to compile a list of individuals to be relocated to safer areas in case of emergencies. Notably, in the past 24 hours, Idukki taluk recorded the highest rainfall at 39.
