Tuesday, July 9, 2024 Harriet Parkinson, a senior at Brigham Young University, fulfilled a lifelong dream when she joined the Bond With Kuliang: 2024 China-U.S. Youth Festival in Fuzhou, Fujian Province.

Reflecting on her journey from Minnesota to China, Parkinson shared how learning Chinese from a young age sparked her fascination with the country. Organized by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the Fujian Provincial Government, and the All-China Youth Federation, the festival brought together over 500 young participants, including Parkinson and her American peers. Activities throughout the week included cultural exhibitions, sports matches, and dialogues aimed at fostering friendship and understanding.



In a congratulatory letter, Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the event’s significance in promoting bilateral exchange and cooperation, emphasizing the pivotal role of youth in shaping the future of China-U.S. relations.

Kuliang, nestled on the outskirts of Fuzhou, holds a special historical significance as a haven for international residents from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. Their legacy of friendship with local villagers continues to inspire generations, underscoring the enduring bonds nurtured through cultural exchange and shared experiences. As the festival concluded, Parkinson expressed gratitude for the friendships forged and the memories created, embodying the spirit of cross-cultural harmony celebrated .
