Bali is one of Australia's most beloved tourist destinations. However, the idyllic holiday hotspot can be prone to travel troubles, as Catherine Curtis from NSW can attest to. In 2023, the 56-year-old Aussie suffered a catastrophic fall while hiking in Bali, which left her with $24,000 worth of injuries.

While celebrating a much-longed-for family reunion, a sunrise hike up Mount Batur - an active volcano in Bali - quickly sent her holiday plans into chaos. "I was on holiday with 18 family members, from Australia and the UK. Six of us hiked up the volcano, the rest of the group went via Jeep," Catherine tells 9Travel.



READ MORE: These are the best budget airlines for long-haul flights in 2024 Catherine says over the course of the morning she'd had doubts over the trail's safety. "On the way up, I remember worrying about the climb down. Everyone was slipping and sliding as it was very rubble-y and treacherous.

" True to her fears, Catherine lost her footing and found herself sprawled across the mountain. "Out of nowhere I had a massive slip on the gravel and my leg went underneath me, and to my shock I heard it snap. I was in lot of pain and when we looked at my leg, you could see the bone sort of sticking out," she recalls.

Getting back down the mountain was where things got extra tricky. "We probably spent about 10 minutes thinking about the best way to get down because you couldn't get a vehicle to where I was. It was decided that I would sit on the back of the motorbike f.
