Holidaymakers might want check they have the right travel insurance or they could risk forking out thousands, as one family did when they were hit with a whopping £41k medical bill. The disgruntled Brits described their grandad being held 'hostage' by a Turkish hospital after falling seriously ill while on holiday. Malcolm Stocker was whisked to intensive care at Ahu Hospital in Marmaris, where he spent nearly a month battling pneumonia and slipped into a coma.

Thankfully, Malcolm has woken from the coma but the healthcare facility is playing hardball, refusing to let him leave without the hefty £41,000 tab settled, reports . So far, the family has managed to scrape together almost £5,000 through online fundraising efforts, hoping to secure an evac flight back to Blighty for which they'll need about 20 grand. Chiming in with their two pence, one social media user argued: "This was no matter of checking his insurance, he absolutely travelled knowing full well he had no insurance".

Taking a swipe at Malcolm's decision, another added: "He was refused insurance for good reason and still insisted on going to Turkey and now his family are attempting to persuade everyone else to pay for him". Another chimed in with a dose of reality: "Going abroad without insurance is an absolute no no-rather short sighted -will now have to remortgage his house if a home owner." A third raged: "Everyone should have holiday insurance if travelling abroad.

This report is being disingenuous though, .
