A 20-meter-long and 2.5-meter-high fence, covered with black mesh netting, now blocks the view of the famous mountain.
This move aims to control the crowds and mitigate the negative impacts on the local community. The newly erected fence is not the most social media-friendly backdrop for the selfies that visitors typically come for. However, within just a week of its installation, small camera-sized holes began appearing in the mesh.
Tourists quickly exploited these holes to snap pictures of Mount Fuji. Officials found about ten such holes at eye level, perfectly sized for a camera lens. Efforts are currently underway to repair these breaches.
Fujikawaguchiko is renowned for offering some of the best views of Mount Fuji . Yet, the influx of tourists has created significant issues for the town. Visitors often block pavements and stop traffic to capture the perfect shot.
A particularly popular photo spot is outside a Lawson convenience store, where a well-angled photo can make it seem as if Mount Fuji is perched atop the shop’s roof. This location, dubbed “Mt. Fuji Lawson” by foreign tourists, has seen a surge in visitors.
