Saturday, June 15, 2024 In response to the uptick in summer travel, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is collaborating with airports nationwide to mitigate the risk of vehicle and pedestrian incidents on airfields. The increase in warm weather not only leads to more flights but also escalates runway construction and maintenance activities at both commercial and general aviation airports, heightening the likelihood of unauthorized runway intrusions by vehicles and pedestrians. To bolster safety measures, the FAA has distributed updated training materials on vehicle/pedestrian deviations to airport directors.

The materials include a video that underscores the importance of refining airfield procedures and improving awareness of essential airport details like changes, construction sites, safety boundaries, hotspots specific to each airport, and the necessity of maintaining clear, concise communications with the control tower and other ground and air traffic. Additionally, the FAA is enhancing situational awareness through advanced technologies such as Vehicle Movement Area Transponders and Runway Incursion Warning Systems, further safeguarding against potential mishaps on runways. “With a busy summer travel season already underway, we are always looking for ways to improve safety across all airport operations,” said FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker .
