Friday, June 7, 2024 West Indies legend Joel Garner will be honored at Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Caribbean Week in NYC, celebrating his cricket legacy. Cricket icon Joel “Big Bird” Garner is gearing up to attend the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Caribbean Week in New York from June 16-21, 2024. The towering former West Indies fast bowler, standing at 6’8”, will be a key participant in a Cricket Ceremony and Watch Party at the Caribbean-owned S’Aimer NYC restaurant in midtown Manhattan on Monday, June 17.
This event, supported by Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., will feature a live stream of the West Indies vs. Afghanistan ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match taking place in St.
Lucia. Garner, known in the cricketing world for his fearsome pace and deadly yorkers that dismantled many batsmen’s defenses during the 1970s and 1980s, boasts an impressive career Test bowling average of 20.97.
He played his final Test in 1987, marking the end of an era alongside Courtney Walsh. He was the last to retire among the legendary West Indies quartet known as the ‘Awesome Foursome’ – Michael Holding, Andy Roberts, Joel Garner, and Colin Croft.
