Thursday, June 13, 2024 The Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) has welcomed its first Sustainability & Community Engagement Advisor, reinforcing the venue’s dedication to fostering sustainable practices. The venue, overseen by ASM Global, has selected Saffron Benner, who previously spearheaded the Sustainable Development Goals initiative at Griffith University, for this pioneering position. This role is a key component of BCEC’s strategy to enhance its environmental initiatives, particularly in anticipation of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which aim to set a new standard for sustainability.
In her role, Saffron Benner will concentrate on the Centre’s environmental and social sustainability efforts, championing existing and new programs aimed at minimizing BCEC’s ecological footprint. She highlights the creation of a comprehensive sustainability plan as a primary focus, aiming to establish both immediate and long-term objectives. “ BCEC’s aim is to integrate the goals across all operational practices, supporting our long-held commitment to working with our partners, the community and our staff to ensure our actions have positive social and environmental outcomes.
This is an imperative for us going forward.” Historically, BCEC has been at the forefront of adopting eco-friendly measures. It was among the first to join Australia’s Greenhouse Challenge in 2001.
