A major UK airport has ditched the stringent liquid rules thanks to a security boost, just in time for the summer rush. People travelling through can kiss goodbye to the plastic bags that have always been used to store tiny bottles of travel soaps and shampoos and say hello to leaving all those various ointments inside their carry-on. From now, new scanners at the airport mean that passengers no longer need to bother removing their 100ml bottles from their bag, and in the coming months, the airport is looking to scrap the size limits almost entirely.

Electronics like laptops can also stay inside people’s luggage. Once the security upgrade is complete, passengers will be permitted to carry up to two litres of liquids through the airport - a game changer. However, until at least 1 June, the 100ml rule will stay in place.

Al Titterington, Terminal Operations Director of Birmingham Airport said: “We have invested £60m in our new security search area to ensure readiness for the 1 June 2024. Whilst the airport is ready with its new security technology, we are awaiting the final approval of the two litre liquid allowance.” Bristol Airport will also be following suit and ditching the rules from June 14.

Graeme Gamble, the chief operating officer at Bristol Airport, told : “We are delighted all customers travelling from Bristol Airport will benefit from the state-of-the-art technology being introduced at security. London City Airport has had the new security screening system .
