Wednesday, May 22, 2024 Avelo Airlines announced the commencement of twice-weekly nonstop flights between Tweed New Haven Regional Airport and Washington, D.C.’s Dulles International Airport.

This move restores a longstanding Tweed destination and raises the number of destinations Avelo flies to and from New Haven to 26. Avelo founder and CEO Andrew Levy expressed excitement over the new service, highlighting that it offers southern Connecticut residents more travel options and easier access to the nation’s capital. Tweed New Haven Regional Airport previously offered flights to Washington, D.



C. for many years, initially through US Airways and later via American Eagle after the airlines merged. These services ceased when American stopped serving Tweed in September 2021.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont emphasized the economic benefits of the new service. He noted that increasing the number of destinations from Tweed enhances the New Haven region’s accessibility, fostering economic viability and business growth. Avelo’s continued expansion in Connecticut is strengthening connectivity for existing companies and stimulating further regional development.

Matt Hoey, chairman of the Tweed New Haven Airport Authority, praised Avelo’s growth in New Haven.
