It's the stuff of road trip nightmares: you've got the wind in your hair , your friends in the back. And then a flash, bang or hiss before the car dies in the middle of nowhere. This doesn't have to be your road trip experience of course.

In fact, provided you plan adequately before you head off, your adventure should be memorable for all the right reasons. Here's how. Maybe download a video to your phone about how to replace a tyre, in case you need to do it while you have no phone service. An emergency roadside kit is important too (don't forget a jump start battery and jumper cables), as is a first aid kit, plus a torch should things go belly up at night. You'll be glad you remembered snacks, drinks and a cooler bag, as well as a few games or activities for your roadside stops.

While on the topic of those, you really don't want to miss throwing a roll of toilet paper and some hand sanitiser in the back. You'll be thankful when you see some of those 'rest stops'. It's old school, yes, but also consider buying a map.
