Wednesday, July 3, 2024 As the NRW summer holidays commence, Cologne/Bonn Airport is bracing for its busiest travel surge of the year. During the next six and a half weeks, the airport anticipates welcoming 1.7 million passengers.
The peak travel times are expected to occur on the final two weekends of the vacation in mid-August, with each weekend seeing about 118,000 travelers. The most congested day, projected to be July 19, will likely see 41,000 passengers arriving and departing. “During the summer vacations, we again experience a pleasing increase in passenger numbers.
Last year already saw a strong summer of travel, which is topped by this year’s forecast. What is new is that some vacation travelers are apparently waiting for the European Football Championships to start, with the Friday after the final emerging as the peak day,” says Thilo Schmid, CEO of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH . “This summer our passengers, including many families, are once again traveling to the popular sunny destinations in southern Europe.
We are delighted about the continuing desire to travel and are well prepared for increased passenger volumes.” Destinations Favored by Travelers Throughout the summer, travelers can choose from flights to 105 international destinations across 33 countries, serviced by 25 airlines. Consistent with past trends, the favored destinations include Turkey, Spain, Italy, and Greece, with Croatia and Portugal also drawing significant numbers.
