A woman who had been vaping for only 12 months developed dry bleeding sores in her mouth which have led her to struggle to eat and drink. Doctors at the Department of Oral Medicine in Bandung Indonesia , thought the woman had herpes however after assessment concluded the ulcers in her mouth were caused by her habit of vaping. The woman sought medical help after suffering for a month.
She had crusts across her lips and a sore spot on the right corner of her mouth that often cracked and bled. There were also yellowish ulcers coating the inside of her mouth, cheek and tongue. In a paper published in the International Medical Cases Reports journal, one of the medics wrote: "She was a healthy individual, and before this condition appeared, she had no history of taking medications," The Sun reports.
The woman was tested for herpes but the tests came back negative. Her body was also checked for other sores but there were none. The doctors were able to make a diagnosis concluding the patient was suffering from oral erythema multiforme - a skin condition considered to be an allergic reaction to an infection or some medicines - most likely caused by vaping.
The medics said: "The condition appears to be related to an allergy to vaping in an active vape user, which has never been recorded, making it a rare case." It is estimated to occur in less than one per cent of those aged 20 to 40 but tends to be chronic and has a 37 per cent chance of reoccurring. The condition begins as red or pin.
