The show opened with Whoopi dressed as the character she played in the film with her former cast mates with a rendition of Oh Happy Day, one of the biggest numbers from the film.

Whoopi played Deloris Van Cartier, who then turned into her nun persona Sister mARY Clarance, and led the high school choir in hope to save the facility from closing. Lauryn Hill was not in attendance and many wished she was. Viewers at home could not contain their excitement as they reminisced with the cast.
