NOROVIRUS is one of the most common stomach bugs in Ireland, otherwise known as a vomiting bug. The bug is nicknamed the "winter vomiting bug" because it is usually most common around that time of year, but there have been a surge of cases in Ireland over recent weeks. Tallaght hospital in Dublin has been forced to restrict visitors over a surge in infections in the hospital.
In a statement they said Covid-19 cases had also risen in the hospital. They said: "We would like to remind you that all visits to patients have been suspended. “This is in the interest of patient safety to protect your loved ones from exposure to COVID-19 and Norovirus.
“There is no visiting allowed, except by prior arrangement with a patient’s medical team in cases of end-of-life or critical illness." They continued: "This includes no visiting anywhere on the Hospital campus, i.e.
, inside or outside the Hospital/Car Park etc. “This is to protect you, your family, and healthcare staff. Visitors who attempt to visit will be turned away by security.
” The hospital have organised a care package service for families of patients so they can drop something off for their loved ones. This can be done between 2pm and 4pm at the main reception. The hospital advised: "If you are unable to drop your care package between 2pm-4pm then please go to main reception and they will contact the Ward directly.
Visitors that attempt to visit will be turned away." Describing the illness the HSE outline it is not usual.
