KEY WEST, Fla. (WFLA) — A fleet of wacky “do it yourself” vessels set sail from Key West on Sunday, battling it out in an annual competition that raises money for local veterans. In the Schooner Wharf Minimal Regatta, competitors must fashion a boat and paddles out of just a single sheet of plywood, some two-by-fours and duct tape.

The creatively-designed vessels can be surprisingly intricate, ranging from simple canoes to recreations of the Titanic and pirate ships. The teams are asked with staying afloat long enough to complete a short course without ending up in the water. “Costumes and themed entries are encouraged, and many boats end up being more scenic than seaworthy,” the competition’s website reads.

“Entries in past regattas have included alligators, spaceships, guitars, wine bottles and replicas of schooners, shrimp boats, pirate vessels and paddle boats!” Sailors can win prizes in categories like “most creative design” and “fastest boat.” Organizers present the “sinker awards” to captains who go down with their ships. The $20 entry fee goes to support the local American Legion Post 28.
