Uttarakhand high court has given order to find an alternative name for an avian disease popularly known as ‘Ranikhet disease’ in the state. Since Ranikhet is a famous tourist spot, courts find it negatively affecting the image and tourism in this hill town. Dehradun : The Uttarakhand high court has given a directive to find a suitable name for a disease which includes the name of a picturesque hill town and a famous tourist spot Ranikhet in the state.

This decision came into light after a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed by a resident of this town which says that it negatively impacts the reputation of town and tourism as well. Negative Impact on Tourism In a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Satish Joshi, a resident of Ranikhet, it was said that the name “Ranikhet disease” negatively impacts the hill station’s reputation. Additionally, the disease’s name has led to concerns about tourism and Ranikhet’s image as a serene and beautiful destination.

During the hearing, chief justice Ritu Bahari and justice Rakesh Thapliyal acknowledged that the picturesque town’s allure is overshadowed by its association with this avian disease. HC has directed to find an alternative name Responding to this PIL, the Uttarakhand high court has directed the state government to propose an alternative name for the disease. To dissociate the disease from the town’s name and enhance Ranikhet’s positive image, the court has given this verdict.
