The top 20 worst places to live in the UK have been revealed, thanks to Brits have a weird, almost-morbid fascination with seeing which parts of our island are the worst. And to help fuel that, the Daily Star set out trying to find out the answer – and to compile the definitive list of the grimmest places to live. Turning to Google's artificial intelligence-powered large language model chatbot Gemini (formally known as Bard), we asked it to put together a list of the worst places to live in the UK.
And topping that list is a place that routinely comes out ranked highly when it comes to mapping the UK's worst areas – Luton. Gemini claims that the much-maligned town ranks top for five reasons – lower wages, lack of amenities, air quality, a very high crime rate and a “perceived lack of character”. It said: “Luton struggles with a higher crime rate than the national average.
This can make some residents feel unsafe. Compared to other parts of the UK, Luton offers lower average wages. This can make it difficult to afford a good standard of living.
Luton has been criticised for not having a lot to see and do, particularly when compared to other towns and cities in the UK. Some people find Luton to lack the charm and historical character of other British towns. Sitting on the fence a bit, Gemini did claim that it's not all bad, adding that Luton has a “vibrant and multicultural community, and it's a good location for commuting to London”.
