NEW York has divided opinions after announcing that some of their visitors’ favorite items will no longer be offered in hotels. The change, which aims to reduce waste, will go into effect from the beginning of 2025. Hotels with more than 50 rooms will no longer be allowed to provide small bottles of shampoo and lotions in New York from January 1, 2025.
Smaller hotels will have to embrace the ban from January 1, 2026. According to The New York Times , the bill was passed in 2019 but enforcement was delayed to give hotels time to use bottles under 12 ounces they’d already purchased. Hotels found to be ignoring the legislation will be given 30 days to resolve the issue before receiving a $250 fine.
The sum will increase to $500 for continually breaking the restriction. Hilton is leading the way for change, having swapped to full-size bottles in 2023. Meanwhile, Marriott recently announced that they’ve also already begun to swap small haircare products for “larger, pump-topped bottles.
” “When fully implemented across the globe, Marriott International's expanded toiletry program is expected to prevent about 500 million tiny bottles annually from going to landfills,” a Marriot spokesperson said. Washington State recently passed a bill revealing they will also be banning small toiletries from January 1, 2027. This comes after California banned small bottles of cosmetics from their hotels.
However, not everyone is happy about the environmentally-friendly change to hotel.
